The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Assess and treat patients’ oral health needs.
  • Maintain dental records and charts.
  • Sterilize instruments and other equipment.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from providing assistance to dental staff to providing services as a licensed Dentist.

Jobs and Descriptions

Dental Assistant

Dental Assistant accountable for assisting a Dentist or Dental Hygienist in patient care, preparing materials for patient impressions and restorations, exposing radiographs, and processing dental x-ray film as directed. Under supervision, may apply topical anesthetics and cavity preventive agents to teeth and gums. Independently performs office duties including scheduling, handling records, bills, payments, and ordering supplies and materials.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency. Certification as a Dental Assistant preferred or relevant experience.

Dental Hygienist

Dental Hygienist accountable for cleaning teeth, examining for signs of oral disease, educating patients on oral hygiene, taking and developing x-rays, implementing infection prevention procedures, and applying fluoride and sealants. Independently screens patients, reviews medical and dental histories, documents patients’ oral hygiene status, and maintains dental records. May supervise or direct the work of Dental Assistants.

Requires state licensure as a Dental Hygienist.

Dentist

Dentist accountable for diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gingiva and related oral structures. Independently removes tooth decay, dental restorations, examines x-rays, applies sealants, straightens teeth, and repairs fractured teeth. Performs oral surgery, extracts teeth, administers anesthetics and writes prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications. May make referrals for more specialized care. Supervises the work of Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants.

Requires state licensure as a Dentist.
