Community Setting: Jobs in this family work with individuals and groups to provide social services to evaluate and ensure the safety, stability, and well-being of adults or children, interact with community partners and courts to provide these services, and advocate on their behalf. The jobs in this family may help individuals deal with addictions and substance use disorders; family, parenting and marital challenges; suicide; self-sufficiency; stress management; challenges with self-esteem; and concerns associated with the physical, cognitive/mental, and emotional health of the aging and disabled population (e.g., estate and financial management).

Clinical Setting: Jobs in this family work with individuals and groups to provide social services in a psychiatric/medical setting as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team to assess, treat and ensure the safety, stability and well-being of adults or children, and advocate on their behalf. The jobs in this family may help individuals deal with addictions and substance use disorders; family, parenting, and marital challenges; suicide; self-sufficiency; stress management; challenges with self-esteem; and concerns associated with the physical, cognitive/mental, and emotional health of the seriously mental ill, intellectual/developmental disabilities, child/adolescent, and geriatric populations.

Social Services Specialist I

Positions at this level work under the supervision of higher levels to create and/or maintain a service plan throughout the duration of a case, including performing assessments, coordinating, and may deliver direct services with community partners and documenting all relevant activities, actions taken, and contacts involved with a case.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience. Appointing authority may require social worker’s license.

Social Services Specialist II

Second-level professional position accountable for coordinating and implementing the delivery of assigned services (e.g., adoption, foster care, parent training, substitute care, family-centered services, permanency planning, family and individual or group therapy, protective and/or in-home services, biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans, documents patient progress, participate in interdisciplinary treatment plan, refer to community resources and discharge planning) that require specialized knowledge, for the client to ensure proper care and support. At this level, employees must possess the ability to assess physical and emotional risk to the client throughout the duration of the case or in response to a reportable condition (which may include conducting home visits) to observe and interview the family and/or client; obtain information through interviews of others involved with the family and client (e.g., extended family members, school officials, doctors, churches, therapists, etc.) to determine needs, ensure stability, and safety of the client, respond to emergencies, initiate emergency court action, and/or issue a finding that either supports or finds unsupported claims of abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years of experience. Appointing authority may require social worker’s license.

Social Services Specialist III

Third-level professional position accountable for possessing a thorough knowledge of social service policies, practices, and techniques, having mastered the technical job content, perform work of greater complexity, exercise greater independence in making decisions, and have an established reputation and credibility both within the agency and community. Positions at this level may perform the duties described at the lower levels and demonstrate expertise in a particular area of social service (e.g., adoption, medical, etc.) OR in specific core processes such as case management, relationship management, and/or knowledge of community resources OR provide work coordination, case review, consultation, technical assistance, policy development, and training to the lower levels.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of experience. Appointing authority may require social worker’s license.

Social Services Team Lead

Supervisory-level employees accountable for the direct day-to-day social service activities for an assigned unit/area, including performing the work overseen and supervising professional and vocational staff (recruitment; selection; hire; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline). At this level, employees interpret applicable State and Federal laws and regulations that guide program policies and procedures.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience. Appointing authority may require a Master’s Degree and/or social worker’s license.

Social Services Supervisor

Second-level supervisory positions accountable for overseeing first-line supervisors of social service activities of a facility or program. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations; training; work planning, assignments, and review; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. Participates in developing procedures and administrative policies and administering program budget.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of experience, and 1-3 years of supervisory experience. Appointing authority may require a Master’s Degree and/or social worker’s license.

Social Services Manager

Social Service Manager accountable for the oversight of social service activities of a facility or program. Accountable for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating programs and evaluating the effectiveness of these programs. Develops procedures and administrative policies, and administers program budget. At this level, employees serve on an agency’s leadership team.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree, 5+ years of experience, and 2-3 years of supervisory experience. Appointing authority may require a Master’s Degree and/or social worker’s license.
